Before diving into specific fabrics, it helps to understand why fabric type matters for DTF.
DTF transfers use a hot-melt adhesive powder that activates under heat and pressure. When you press a transfer, that adhesive melts into the fabric fibers and forms a mechanical bond — essentially locking the design into the surface of the material.
Fabrics with a tighter, smoother weave give the adhesive more consistent contact, producing cleaner edges and stronger adhesion. Fabrics with texture, stretch, or synthetic coatings can interfere with bonding. And fabrics with very low heat tolerance can scorch or distort before the adhesive has a chance to fully set.

1. 100% Cotton — Excellent ✅
Cotton is the gold standard for DTF transfers. The natural fibers bond extremely well with the hot-melt adhesive, producing vibrant, clean prints with strong adhesion and excellent wash durability.

- Polyester is more heat-sensitive than cotton. Pressing at too high a temperature can cause the fabric to scorch, melt, or take on a shiny glazed appearance (called "ghosting" on sublimated polys)

Tri-blend blanks have become extremely popular in the retail and fashion apparel space because of their incredibly soft hand feel and drape. The combination of cotton, polyester, and rayon produces a lightweight, heathered look that's hard to replicate with other fabric types.
DTF works well on tri-blends, though the slightly looser, softer weave means you may see very minor texture in the print on some blanks. For most designs this is barely noticeable.
Press settings: 295–310°F, 10–12 seconds, medium pressure, cold peel. Avoid over-pressing — rayon can be sensitive to prolonged heat.

5. Canvas and Duck Canvas — Very Good ✅

- Canvas handles high pressing temperatures without issue

6. Denim — Good ✅

7. Nylon — Good with Care ⚠️

- A hat press attachment (a curved platen that matches the crown of a cap)
- Or a rounded silicone pressing pillow for use with a standard press

Fabrics to Approach with Caution
Spandex / Lycra / High-Stretch Fabrics ⚠️
Fabrics with significant stretch (compression shorts, leggings, swimwear) present two challenges for DTF:
- Heat sensitivity — spandex degrades under standard pressing temperatures
- Stretch vs. adhesion — the transfer film is less elastic than the fabric, so aggressive stretching after pressing can crack or peel the print over time
If you need to decorate high-stretch items, use lower temperatures (270–285°F), apply with very light pressure, and design with this limitation in mind — smaller designs in lower-stretch areas of the garment hold up better.
Waterproof / DWR-Coated Fabrics ⚠️
Fabrics treated with DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coatings — common on outdoor jackets, rain gear, and some athletic items — have a surface treatment that actively repels adhesion. DTF transfers may appear to bond initially but peel away much more easily than on untreated fabrics.
If the client requires decoration on a waterproof item, test thoroughly before committing to a full run. Results will vary significantly by brand and coating type.
Ribbed Knit and Waffle Knit ⚠️
The raised texture of ribbed and waffle knit fabrics creates uneven contact with the transfer film during pressing. The adhesive bonds to the raised ribs but not the valleys between them, resulting in a textured print surface and reduced durability.
DTF can be used on ribbed items (like ribbed tank tops or waffle-knit beanies) but expect some texture variation and reduced edge sharpness.
Fabrics to Avoid
Velvet and Velour ❌
The pile surface of velvet and velour makes proper adhesion nearly impossible. The transfer sits on the tips of the pile fibers rather than bonding to the base fabric, and will peel away easily under normal wear and washing.
Heavily Textured Wovens (Burlap, Hessian) ❌
Very coarse, open-weave fabrics don't provide enough surface contact for the adhesive to bond properly. The result is a patchy, poorly adhered print that won't survive washing.
Untreated Leather and Faux Leather ❌
While some faux leather products can accept DTF transfers with very specific settings, genuine leather and most untreated faux leather surfaces repel adhesion. Specialty leather transfer films exist for this application, but standard DTF transfers are not designed for leather surfaces.

- Press a small test transfer (2"x2" or smaller) on a scrap piece or inside seam of the garment

- Perform a stretch test — gently stretch the fabric in multiple directions and check for cracking or lifting
- Do a peel adhesion test — try to lift an edge of the print with your fingernail. It should resist cleanly.
